It's great that you're thinking about how to support your team during Dry January or in their broader alcohol-free journey. As managers, you already have a significant role in shaping the culture and wellbeing of your team, and by offering guidance and support in this area, you're not only helping to support their work-life balance but also contributing to a positive and inclusive environment.
To help make the process easier for you, here are a few simple yet effective ways to provide that support:
1. Lead by Example
Start by being visible and setting the tone yourself. If you’re participating in Dry January or have personal experiences to share, doing so openly can motivate others and create a culture where alcohol-free living is respected and normalised. Here's a great blog post you can share now that those participating are one week in, to help get the conversation started: https://alcoholchange.org.uk/blog/one-week-alcohol-free-whats-happening-in-your-body
2. Offer Alcohol-Free Alternatives
At staff after-work drinks, or social events, ensure that alcohol-free options are always available. This way, those who are abstaining can still feel included without the pressure to drink. To keep barriers as low as possible and to help normalise, don't ask if anyone wants one in advance, just have them there as standard. Here are some low-and-no options with reviews that you could share https://alcoholchange.org.uk/help-and-support/managing-your-drinking/low-and-no-alcohol-reviews
3. Create a Supportive Environment
Encourage open dialogue. If someone mentions that they’re taking part in Dry January or are on a journey to stay alcohol-free, let them know you’re supportive. Simple check-ins here and there through the month, or just a little recognition can go a long way in making someone feel seen and valued.
4. Highlight the Benefits
Sharing facts or success stories about how reducing alcohol can improve energy levels, reduce stress, and enhance overall wellbeing can reinforce the positive impacts of taking part in Dry January or living alcohol-free. You can usually see:
Reduced anxiety and better mood
Improved mental health
Sleeping better and having more energy
Saving money
Losing weight

5. Respect Personal Choices
Everyone’s journey is different. Be sure to respect employees who choose not to take part in Dry January or who might be navigating their relationship with alcohol differently. Ensure that the workplace is supportive and doesn’t make anyone feel singled out for their choices.
Employees who are struggling with drug or alcohol issues may feel more comfortable asking for help at work if they know their concerns will be handled with discretion and confidentiality. Just like any other health issue, individuals facing substance misuse have the right to confidentiality and support. Encourage them to seek professional assistance, either through their GP or a specialist drug and alcohol service. 6. Offer Flexibility
Some team members might be using Dry January as an opportunity to reset their lifestyle, and providing flexibility in their workload (if possible) or offering encouragement can contribute to their overall success. For example, lessening pressures on having to be involved in drinks tastings, or social events.
By simply incorporating some of these suggestions into your leadership style, you're not only offering a tangible form of support but also fostering a healthier, more engaged, and motivated team. It’s a great return for both the people and the business as a whole.
Thanks for reading, if you're doing Dry January - me too! Keep up the good work! If you're a manager I'd love to know if these were helpful tips, and if there's any more support you need.
